WMV Ski Week '27

Stanley, Idaho (Sawtooth Mountains)

Beyond the ski area boundary...

If you're a strong intermediate/advanced skier* or snowboarder* who loves the mountains, hiking, and exploring wild places, you may just fall in love with backcountry skiing. I certainly did.

It started while I was attending the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado. One day I ducked beyond the boundary of a large ski area and into the backcountry. Within minutes I was hooked. The quiet. The adventure. The feeling of earning every turn. It completely changed how I experienced the mountains.

Looking back, though, I realize I had no business being out there. I didn't have the knowledge, training, or experience to make good decisions in avalanche terrain.

I was lucky.

That's one of the reasons I created this program.

Rather than learning in a crowded resort environment, we'll spend the week based in Stanley, Idaho—one of my favorite mountain towns anywhere. Nestled beneath the Sawtooth Mountains, Stanley feels like stepping back in time. There are no lift lines, no traffic, and no crowds—just rugged peaks, wide-open valleys, incredible snow, natural hot springs, and a small mountain town where everyone seems to know each other.  A different universe than any "ski town" i have been to.

Our days will be a blend of learning, skiing, exploring, and simply enjoying being in the mountains. We'll tour through beautiful terrain, share great meals, soak in hot springs after long days outside, and spend evenings swapping stories with new friends. It's as much about the experience as it is about becoming a better backcountry skier.

This week is designed for skiers and snowboarders who already love skiing and the outdoors but have little—or even no—backcountry experience.

Join me and a small group for an unforgettable adventure. You'll build the skills and confidence to begin exploring beyond the ski area safely, while experiencing one of the most spectacular winter destinations in North America.

*strong skier.  Comfortable skiing off piste / powder at a ski area.  Ski ungroomed steep blues and easier blacks (back bowls, trees, etc...)

The mountains have a way of teaching us more then just skiing

My hope is that you leave Stanley with new backcountry skills, new friends, and a little more confidence than when you arrived.

Available Dates (limit 5 guests per week)

WEEK 1: 1-8 Feb

WEEK 2 : 8- 12 Mar

Meet your host

Brian Bell

Brian Bell is an apprentice AMGA ski guide with Sawtooth Mountain Guides, an AIARE Avalanche Instructor, and a Wilderness First Responder. Before becoming a guide, he spent his career leading people—as an F-16 pilot in the U.S. Air Force and later as a technology executive.

He created WMV Ski Week because he believes the mountains teach far more than skiing. His goal is for every guest to leave Stanley with new skills, new confidence, and friendships that last well beyond the week.

What clients are saying about WMV ski week!

Scott Irwin, Camber Partners

Jason Hable, Brian Kelly, Ryan F. and I had a world-class experience testing our limits and building new skills. Brian put on a world-class program for those looking to combine backcountry skiing and riding with skill development, learning, and team-building. There is a great lineup of events for 2027 ski season. Check them out

Brian Kelly, Lightspeed Venture Partners

What an experience! WMV is best in class, and Stanley, ID did not disappoint.

Jason Hable, Camber Partners

We had a fantastic week skiing in the Sawtooth Mountains with Brian Bell and the WMV team.  Stanley, Idaho made an incredible basecamp, and Brian and his crew ran a truly first-class operation.  If you’re looking to build new backcountry skills and push yourself in the mountains next winter, I highly recommend checking out the programs below.
